Books guide

Gather early reviews with an advance reader team

Recruit and organise a group of advance readers who receive your book before launch and leave honest reviews, while staying within UK law and retailer rules.

Estimated time: 2–4 hours spread over several weeksUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide six to eight weeks before a book launch, or when an existing book has few reviews. You need a finished, edited manuscript or proof copy, a launch date and a simple way to send files securely, such as a book delivery service or your mailing list tool.

Step by step

  1. Understand the rules before you start

UK consumer law bans fake reviews and hiding the fact that a review was given in return for something, and retailers have their own policies on reviews from free copies, friends and family. Never pay for reviews, ask for positive ones only or offer rewards linked to a star rating. Ask advance readers to say in their review that they received a free copy, and read each retailer's current review guidelines before launch.
