Use this guide when someone at home has a common winter illness such as a cold, flu or a stomach bug. Have a thermometer, tissues, soap and plenty of fluids ready, and know your GP and NHS 111 details.

Step by step

  1. Check for emergency signs

    Call 999 if the person has difficulty breathing, chest pain, a rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass, severe drowsiness or confusion, or signs of severe dehydration. For babies and young children, seek urgent advice if you are worried at all.
