Books guide

Care for, store and value old books

Protect old and inherited books from damp, light and pests, handle them safely, and find out whether any are worth selling, insuring or donating.

Estimated time: 1–3 hoursUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide when you have inherited a collection, found old books in a loft or want to stop favourite books deteriorating over a damp winter. Have clean hands, a soft brush, a notebook and somewhere clear to work.

Step by step

  1. Move books away from damp and heat

Store books in a dry, well-ventilated room with a steady temperature, not in lofts, garages, cellars or against cold outside walls where condensation forms in winter. Keep them away from radiators, fires and direct sunlight, which dry and fade them. Leave a small gap behind shelves so air can move, and check the room for damp patches or a musty smell.
