Challenge a university decision through appeal and the OIA

Appeal a mark, progression or misconduct decision on grounds your university must consider, build the evidence, and take it to the independent adjudicator if needed.

Estimated time: 3–6 hours to prepare an appeal; the full process can take 2–12 monthsUpdated: 4 October 2026

This guide is for university students in the UK, and the parents or partners supporting them, facing a decision that threatens a degree: a failed module, being withdrawn, a misconduct finding (including alleged AI misuse) or a refused extension. Most appeals fail not because the student is wrong but because they argue the wrong thing, miss a deadline or send no evidence. You will work through your university's own procedure in the right order, make your case on grounds it has to consider, and know when and how to take it to the independent ombudsman. At the end you will have a dated timeline, an evidence bundle, a written appeal and a plan for every possible outcome.

Why this is a Golden Edition guide: Turns a panicked email into a grounds-based appeal, with deadline rules, evidence templates and the exact route to the free independent adjudicator.

Step by step

  1. Find the deadline and the right procedure today

Open the decision letter or portal notice and write down the exact date it was issued; appeal windows are often short (commonly 10–20 working days, but check your own regulations) and run from that date, not from when you read it. Search your university's website for its academic appeals procedure, academic misconduct procedure, complaints procedure and extenuating (mitigating) circumstances policy, and save PDFs of the versions in force now. Decide which route fits: if you dispute how a decision about your results or progression was made, it is an academic appeal; if you are accused of cheating, plagiarism or unauthorised AI use, it is a misconduct process with its own stages; if your complaint is about teaching, supervision or services, it is a complaint. If you cannot get your evidence together in time, submit the appeal on time with what you have and state in writing that further evidence will follow by a named date. Never let the deadline pass while waiting for an answer to an informal email.
