Work & Business guide

Check and plan your paid holiday entitlement

Work out how much paid holiday you are entitled to, check how bank holidays and part-time hours count, and book leave before the year runs out.

Estimated time: 30–45 minutesUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you are not sure you are getting the right amount of paid holiday, work part time or irregular hours, or have days left as your leave year ends. You need your contract or staff handbook, recent payslips and a record of holiday you have taken this year.

Step by step

  1. Find your leave year and contractual entitlement

Check your contract or handbook for your holiday allowance, whether it includes bank holidays and when your leave year starts, as it is not always January or April. Most workers are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year, which for someone working five days a week is 28 days. Your employer can include bank holidays in this and can offer more, but not less.
