Choose a learning project for the dark evenings

Pick one rewarding winter learning project from a set of practical, creative and curious ideas, and set it up so you still enjoy it by spring.

Estimated time: 30–45 minutes to choose and set upUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide if the long evenings are coming and you want to learn something for its own sake rather than for a qualification. Have a notebook, your diary for the next few months and a rough idea of how many evenings a week you can spare.

Step by step

  1. Pick the kind of project that suits you

Decide which of three types appeals most: a hands-on skill with a visible result, a creative project you can share, or a curiosity project where you dig into a subject. Ask yourself 'What would I like to show someone in March?' and write the answer down. Choose one project only; two half-finished projects are less satisfying than one finished one.
