Garden & Outdoors guide

Clear and reclaim an overgrown garden

Take back an overgrown garden safely and in stages, from surveying and cutting back to removing weeds and waste, without destroying plants worth keeping.

Estimated time: several weekendsUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide if you have moved into a home with a neglected garden or let your own get away from you. Autumn and winter are a good time to start, outside the main bird nesting season; you need strong gloves, eye protection, loppers, a pruning saw and a plan for green waste.

Step by step

  1. Survey before you cut anything

Walk round slowly and photograph every area, noting paths, steps, structures and anything hidden like ponds, drains, manholes or old glass. Look for plants worth keeping, such as established shrubs, roses, fruit trees and climbers, and tie a bright ribbon on them. Check for hazards like brambles, broken fences, wasps' nests and needles or sharp litter. Note anything you suspect is Japanese knotweed or another invasive plant, and do not cut or move it until you have checked guidance on GOV.UK.
