Use this guide if you have strong written English, a good ear or a second language and want paid home-based language work. Have a computer with a word processor and PDF reader, good headphones if you want transcription work, and a couple of hours for honest self-tests. 1. Choose your lane and test yourself honestly

   Be clear about the job: proofreading is checking final text for errors and consistency rather than rewriting, transcription is turning audio into text in an agreed style such as verbatim or clean verbatim, and translation normally means translating into your native language from a language you know very well. Test yourself before spending money: proofread a 1,000-word piece with errors a friend has planted and see what you miss, transcribe ten minutes of difficult audio and note how long it takes, or translate a 300-word passage and ask a fluent speaker to check it. Record your speed as a ratio, such as working minutes per 1,000 words or per audio minute, because this number drives your pricing later. Decision rule: if you miss many planted errors, your transcription ratio is very slow, or your translation reads awkwardly, train first and market later. Note that certified translations for official use and court or medical interpreting usually need recognised qualifications and experience, so treat them as a later goal.
