Garden & Outdoors guide

Help garden birds through the winter

Set up feeders, water and shelter for garden birds in autumn and winter, and keep them clean so you help birds without spreading disease.

Estimated time: 30–60 minutesUpdated: 28 September 2026

Use this guide from autumn onwards, when natural food becomes scarce. You need one or two feeders, a bird bath or shallow dish, suitable food and a stiff brush and mild disinfectant for cleaning.

Step by step

  1. Choose good food

Offer high-energy foods such as sunflower hearts, suet pellets or balls, nyjer seed and good-quality seed mixes. Put out soft apples or pears for thrushes and blackbirds. Avoid bread, salty foods, cooking fat from roasting tins and dry desiccated coconut.
