Work & Business guide

Find your first freelance clients

Define a clear offer, tell the right people, use a simple portfolio and a follow-up routine to win your first paying clients without spending on ads.

Estimated time: 3–5 hours to set up, then 30 minutes a dayUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you have just started freelancing or offering a service and have few or no paying clients yet. You need a list of your skills and past work, a professional email address and access to a phone and the online platforms your clients use.

Step by step

  1. Write a one-sentence offer

Describe who you help, with what, and the result, for example: 'I help small cafés in Oxfordshire keep their websites and menus up to date so customers can find them.' A narrow offer is easier to remember and recommend than 'I do design'. Test it by saying it out loud to a friend and asking them to repeat it back.
