Books guide

Give an author talk or reading at a local event

Arrange, prepare and deliver a confident author talk or reading at a library, bookshop, festival or group, and turn the audience into readers.

Estimated time: 3–6 hours of preparationUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you have a published book, or one on the way, and want to meet readers in person, especially during the autumn and winter events season. You need a short description of your book, a few dates you are free and copies of the book or a way for people to buy it.

Step by step

  1. Pitch the event to a venue

Contact libraries, independent bookshops, community groups such as the WI or U3A, schools or local festivals with a short, specific email. For example: 'I am a local author of [book], a [genre] set in [place]. I would love to offer a 40-minute talk on [angle] with a short reading and Q&A, free of charge or at your usual rate.' Offer an angle that interests their audience, such as local history, the research behind the book or how you got published.
