Garden & Outdoors guide

Make your garden safe and welcoming for hedgehogs

Create access holes, safe shelter, food and water, and remove common hazards so hedgehogs can feed and hibernate safely in your garden this winter.

Estimated time: 1–3 hoursUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide in autumn, when hedgehogs are feeding up before hibernation and looking for places to nest. You need a saw or drill for a fence gap, a shallow water dish, suitable hedgehog food, and leaves, logs or a hedgehog house for shelter.

Step by step

  1. Create a hedgehog highway

Hedgehogs travel a long way each night, so fences and walls that block them are a big problem. Cut or drill a gap of about 13cm by 13cm at the base of your fence or gate, which is big enough for a hedgehog but too small for most pets. Talk to your neighbour first and agree where the hole goes, as it may be on a shared boundary. You can say: I would like to make a small hedgehog gap at the bottom of our shared fence, would that be alright with you?
