Move home without losing essential services

Track utilities, readings, addresses and evidence across the final week, moving day and the first days in the new home.

Estimated time: 30–45 minutesUpdated: 27 September 2026

Step by step

  1. Build one change-of-address list

Record energy, water, council tax, broadband, insurance, banking, driving records, subscriptions and any organisation that sends important post. Mark owner, deadline and confirmation.

  2. Prepare moving-day evidence

Photograph meter readings with the meter serial number visible, record key handover times and keep the old and new addresses with account references.

  3. Protect the first night

Pack medicines, chargers, documents, basic tools, food, bedding and cleaning supplies separately so essential items do not disappear into general boxes.

  4. Confirm rather than assume

Check final bills, new-account opening readings, postal redirection and scheduled installations. Save confirmation emails and challenge estimated readings promptly.

Ready-to-use checklist

  • Provider list with account references
  • Old and new meter readings photographed
  • Insurance dates confirmed
  • Essential first-night box separated
  • Final bills and deposits tracked

Common problems

The new supplier has the wrong opening reading

Send the dated photograph and meter serial number, and ask for the account to be corrected in writing.

Broadband activation is delayed

Keep the confirmed activation date and fault reference; plan a temporary connection without committing to an unsuitable long contract.
