Plant a bare-root hedge

Use this guide between late autumn and early spring, when bare-root plants are sold and dormant. You need your hedging plants, a spade, a string line, well-rotted compost or leaf mould, mulch and a watering can or hose.

1. Plan the hedge

   Measure the length and decide on the species: hawthorn, field maple, hazel and beech are common native choices, and mixed hedges are good for wildlife. Follow the supplier's spacing, which is often in a staggered double row for a thick hedge. Check your deeds or with neighbours if the hedge is on or near a boundary, and look for underground services before digging.
