Work & Business guide

Prepare for a disciplinary meeting at work

Understand the allegations, gather your evidence, bring a companion, put your side clearly and know how to appeal if you disagree with the outcome.

Estimated time: 2–4 hours spread across the days before the meetingUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you have received a letter inviting you to a disciplinary meeting or hearing. You need the invitation letter, any evidence the employer has sent, your contract or staff handbook and your employer's disciplinary policy. This is general information; for serious cases, get advice from ACAS, a trade union or an employment solicitor.

Step by step

  1. Read the letter and understand the allegations

Check the invitation clearly states what you are accused of, the possible outcome, the date and time, and your right to be accompanied. Under the ACAS Code of Practice on disciplinary and grievance procedures, your employer should tell you the allegations in enough detail to prepare and give you copies of the evidence they intend to use. If anything is missing, ask for it in writing straight away: 'Please send me copies of the evidence you intend to rely on at the meeting.'
