Garden & Outdoors guide

Prepare your greenhouse for winter

Clean, disinfect, insulate and organise a greenhouse in autumn so overwintering plants stay healthy and pests and diseases do not carry into spring.

Estimated time: 2–4 hoursUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide in October or November once summer crops have finished. It works for glass or polycarbonate greenhouses and covers cleaning, insulation, ventilation and safe heating choices. Have buckets, a soft brush, a mild garden disinfectant or detergent, a plant label pen, horticultural bubble wrap, clips and a max-min thermometer ready.

Step by step

  1. Empty and sort

Move plants out on a dry, mild day and sort them into keep, compost and bin. Bin any plants with serious disease rather than composting them. Remove old pots, compost bags and debris, as these are where pests such as vine weevil and red spider mite overwinter.
