Use this guide if you want to buy second-hand items from car boot sales, charity shops or clearances and sell them on for more than you paid, as a regular side income rather than a one-off clear-out. Have a phone with a good camera, a notebook or spreadsheet, and a small stock budget you could afford to lose while you learn. This is general information, not personal tax or legal advice.
Step by step
Pick a niche and test the maths before you buy
Choose one or two categories you already know well, such as hand tools, outdoor clothing, video games, vintage kitchenware or children's book bundles, because knowledge is what lets you spot underpriced items. Before buying anything, search the sold or completed listings on the platforms you plan to use, not the asking prices, and note what similar items actually sold for recently. Work out profit with this formula: realistic sold price minus platform fee, minus payment fee, minus postage and packaging, minus what you paid, minus travel. Decision rule: only buy if a cautious sold price still leaves a profit you are happy with after every cost, and similar items sell within the time you are willing to wait. Your start-up costs to check are stock, packaging, a cheap set of scales, a tape measure and any market pitch fees.
