Sell plants, produce and seeds from your garden

Sell surplus plants, fruit, vegetables, preserves and seeds from home or an honesty stall, following plant health, food hygiene, labelling and tax rules in the UK.

Estimated time: 60–90 minutes to check the rulesUpdated: 12 October 2026

Use this guide if you grow more than you need and want to sell plants, cuttings, fruit and vegetables, jams or seeds from your home, a gate stall or online. Have a list of what you grow, your tenancy, lease or mortgage documents, and your council's contact details. The rules below mainly cover England; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own bodies for some areas. This is general information, not legal advice.

Step by step

  1. Check you can sell from your home

Check your tenancy, lease, mortgage terms and property deeds for restrictions on running a business from home, and tell your home insurer. Occasional sales from your own front garden or driveway are usually fine, but if it becomes a regular business with lots of visitors, parking problems or large signs, ask your council's planning team whether permission is needed. Keep the stall and signs on your own land: selling from a pavement or verge can need street trading consent or highway permission from the council. If you grow on an allotment, check your tenancy agreement before selling the produce, because many restrict selling for profit.
