Set up VS Code as a tidy, productive code editor

Configure Visual Studio Code with sensible settings, a few essential extensions, format on save and the built-in terminal so coding feels smoother.

Estimated time: 30–45 minutesUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide after installing Visual Studio Code, or if your current set-up feels cluttered and slow. Have one real project folder ready to open so you can test each change.

Step by step

  1. Open a folder, not single files

Use File, Open Folder to open your whole project, because search, Git, debugging and extensions all work from the folder. Approve workspace trust only for code you wrote or trust, as untrusted folders can run tasks and extensions. Learn one shortcut now: Ctrl+P on Windows or Cmd+P on Mac to jump to any file by name.
