Type with your voice using built-in dictation

Use the free voice typing built into Windows, Mac, phones, Word and Google Docs to write emails, notes and documents faster, including punctuation and corrections.

Estimated time: 20–40 minutesUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if typing is slow, tiring or painful, or if you think better out loud and want to draft faster. You need a device with a working microphone, a reasonably quiet room and a short piece of text you want to write.

Step by step

  1. Switch on dictation on your device

On Windows, click in any text box and press the Windows key and H to open voice typing. On a Mac, turn on Dictation in System Settings under Keyboard and note the shortcut shown there. On iPhone and Android, tap the microphone icon on the on-screen keyboard; you may need to enable voice input in the keyboard settings first.
