Use memory techniques to remember names and facts

Learn four practical memory techniques, from linking names to images to a simple memory palace, and use them to remember names, lists, numbers and talks.

Estimated time: 30–45 minutes, then 5 minutes a dayUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you forget names moments after hearing them, need to remember a list or speech without notes, or want to learn facts for a quiz, course or job. You need a notebook and something real to practise on, such as a shopping list or the names of people you will meet this week.

Step by step

  1. Remember names with repeat, link and use

When you hear a name, repeat it back straight away: 'Nice to meet you, Priya.' Then link it to something vivid, such as a feature of the person or a word the name sounds like, and picture the two together. Use the name once more before the conversation ends and write it down afterwards with a note on where you met. This three-part habit fixes most names without any special talent.
