50 Common Warning Signs of Infidelity
Lists of warning signs are among the most widely read material on infidelity, and among the most misused. A long list can make almost anyone's partner look suspicious, because most of the behaviours on it are ordinary. This chapter gives each sign the grade it usually deserves on its own, common innocent explanations, and the circumstances in which it tends to carry more weight.
Three points apply throughout. First, the grade describes the sign in isolation; context can raise or lower it. Second, the list is not a scoring system: counting signs tells you very little. Third, every observation should come from ordinary shared life or from information you are legitimately entitled to see.
Phone and digital behaviour
| # | Sign | Grade on its own | Common innocent explanations | Carries more weight when |
|---|
| 1 | Phone always face down | Weak | Habit; avoiding distraction; work notifications | It is a sudden change, and happens mainly when you are present |
| 2 | Changed passwords | Weak | Security advice; employer requirements; a new phone | Access was previously shared and the change is sudden and unexplained |
| 3 | Deleted history | Weak | Storage; tidiness; automatic deletion | Deletion is selective and contact with that person is denied |
| 4 | Hiding screens | Weak | Privacy; work confidentiality; a surprise | It is new, consistent and happens only around you |
| 5 | Unexplained calls | Weak | Work; family; services and appointments | Calls are frequent, at unusual hours, and questions about the caller are evaded |
| 6 | Leaving the room to call | Weak to moderate | Work; family matters; health or money worries | It is new, frequent and never explained |

| 11 | New email accounts | Weak to moderate | Work; a side business; shopping; spam control | The account is concealed and linked to private contact |
| 12 | New apps | Weak | Work groups; clubs; privacy tools | It is a dating app, or the explanation keeps shifting |

Travel and the car

The overall picture
| # | Sign | Grade on its own | Common innocent explanations | Carries more weight when |
|---|
| 49 | A sense of a separate life | Weak to moderate | Healthy independence | It is combined with concealment and inconsistency |
| 50 | Multiple independent signs together | Potentially significant | A single innocent cause explaining several signs | The signs are genuinely independent, include an inconsistency, and persist over time |
How to use this list
The most important entry is the last. A single sign, or several signs with a common innocent cause, tells you very little. Several genuinely independent signs that persist, include concealment directed at you, and involve at least one inconsistency with known facts deserve a direct conversation.
If you have recognised items on this list, the next steps are not to look for more, but to work through a structured checklist and self assessment, then consider whether a direct conversation is warranted.
