Family & Relationships guide

Agree a family screen-time plan that sticks

Work out screen and phone rules with your children rather than for them, write them into a short family agreement and review it so it keeps working.

Estimated time: 45–60 minutes plus a family meetingUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide when arguments about phones, gaming or tablets keep flaring up, or before a child gets their first phone. Have a rough idea of how screens are used in your home now, and set aside a calm time when everyone, including adults, can sit down together.

Step by step

  1. Look at what is really happening first

For three or four days, notice when screens cause friction rather than counting minutes: bedtime, mealtimes, homework, mornings, or when a game has to stop mid-match. Check the screen time reports on your own phone too, because children notice double standards quickly. Write down the two or three flashpoints that cause most trouble, as these are what the plan needs to solve.
