Home & Living guide

Apply for a council tax discount or reduction

Check whether a single person discount, a disregard, a disability reduction or help for low incomes applies to your home, and apply to your council correctly.

Estimated time: 30–60 minutesUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you live alone, share with students, carers or someone with a severe mental impairment, have adaptations for a disabled person, or are on a low income. You need your council tax bill or account number and the names and circumstances of everyone aged 18 or over living with you.

Step by step

  1. List everyone who lives there

Write down every adult aged 18 or over who normally lives in the property, with a note of anything that might mean they are not counted: full-time student, apprentice, some carers, someone with a severe mental impairment, someone living in a care home or hospital long term, and others. Councils call people who are not counted 'disregarded'. If only one adult is counted, you can usually get a single person discount of 25%, even if other people live there.
