Home & Living guide

Get your boiler serviced before winter

Book a Gas Safe registered engineer, check they are genuine, know what a proper service covers and deal with any faults they find before the cold sets in.

Estimated time: 30 minutes to arrange, plus the visit (usually about an hour)Updated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide in early autumn, before engineers get booked up and before a breakdown leaves you without heating. You need your boiler make and model (usually on a label under the front cover), any warranty paperwork and a note of the date it was last serviced.

Step by step

  1. Check what you already have and what you need

Look through paperwork for the last service date, the boiler's warranty terms and whether you already pay for a boiler cover plan that includes an annual service. Many manufacturer warranties require a yearly service by a Gas Safe registered engineer, so a missed one could void it. If you rent, your landlord is responsible for an annual gas safety check and for arranging repairs, so ask them for the date rather than booking yourself.
