Use this guide if an employer, volunteer group or letting agent asks you for a basic criminal record check and you need to apply for it yourself. Have your passport or driving licence, National Insurance number and your address history for the last five years ready.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the check level you need

Ask the organisation: 'Which level of check do you need – basic, standard or enhanced – and should I apply myself or will you apply?' Only basic checks can be applied for by individuals; standard and enhanced checks must be requested by an employer or organisation for eligible roles. A basic check shows unspent convictions and conditional cautions.
