Ask your MP for help with a problem

Find your MP, decide whether they can help, write a clear message that gets action and follow up, so a stuck problem with a government body moves forward.

Estimated time: 30–60 minutesUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide when you are stuck with a national body such as HMRC, the DWP, the Passport Office or the Home Office, or want to raise a concern about a law or policy. Have your reference numbers, dates and copies of letters or emails ready.

Step by step

  1. Find your MP and check they are the right person

Find your MP using your postcode on the UK Parliament website, and note that MPs only take up cases for people who live in their constituency. MPs can help with national government departments and agencies, while councillors are usually better for local services such as bins, housing, roads and council tax. Courts, private disputes and matters already with an ombudsman are usually outside what an MP can change.
