Avoid surprise charges when you hire a car

Book a hire car with the right cover, fuel policy and deposit, record its condition at pickup and return, and challenge unfair damage or extra charges afterwards.

Estimated time: 30–45 minutes to book, plus 15 minutes at pickupUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide before you book a hire car in the UK or abroad, or if you have been hit with an unexpected charge after returning one. Have your driving licence, the card you will pay with and your travel dates ready.

Step by step

  1. Compare the full price, not the headline rate

Before booking, read what is included: the insurance excess, fuel policy, mileage limit, extra driver fees, young or older driver charges, one-way fees and out-of-hours collection charges. A cheap daily rate with a large excess and a costly fuel policy can end up dearer than a higher rate with fewer extras. Screenshot the booking terms and the price breakdown so you have proof of what you agreed.
