Join your local library
Joining a public library in the UK is free. Search for your local council's library service and join online, or visit a branch with proof of address. You will get a library card number and a PIN or password.
Find out which apps your library uses
Check the library's website for a section called digital library, eLibrary or eBooks and audiobooks. Many UK libraries use apps such as Libby or BorrowBox, and some offer more than one. Note which services your card works with.
Install the app and sign in
Download the app your library uses from your device's app store. Choose your library service in the app, then enter your card number and PIN. If sign-in fails, contact the library to check your card is activated for digital loans.
Borrow, reserve and download
Search or browse, then tap Borrow when a title is available or Reserve if it is on loan, as digital copies are often limited like printed ones. Download titles over Wi-Fi so you can read or listen offline. Loans end automatically, so there are no late fees for digital items.
Read on the device you prefer
You can read in the app itself on a phone or tablet. Some apps can send loans to certain e-readers, so check your library's help pages for which devices are supported. Audiobooks play in the app with sleep timer and speed controls.
Explore the other free extras
Many libraries also offer free digital newspapers and magazines, online courses and family history resources with the same card. Ask about a home library service if you or a relative cannot get to a branch. You can also request titles the library does not yet stock.

Practical tips
- Place reservations on popular new titles early, as waiting lists can be long.
- Return digital loans early when you finish so the next person gets them sooner.
- If you move to a new council area, join the library there, as digital access is usually tied to your local service.
Common problems
The app says my card number or PIN is wrong.
Check you have chosen the right library service in the app, since neighbouring councils often appear in the list. If it still fails, ask your library to reset your PIN or confirm digital access is enabled on your card.
The book I want always has a waiting list.
Reserve it and turn on notifications so you get it as soon as it is free. Meanwhile check other apps your library uses, as the same title may be available there.
My e-reader cannot open library books.
Not every e-reader supports library loans in the UK, so check the app's help pages for supported devices. Reading in the app on a phone or tablet always works as a fallback.
