Estimated time: 30 minutes to set up, then 2–3 short sessions a weekUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you or someone you care for is feeling less steady, has had a fall or near miss, or simply wants to stay strong and independent. Have a sturdy chair without wheels, comfortable shoes and a clear space near a wall or kitchen worktop.

Step by step

  1. Check it is safe to start

If you have had a fall, feel dizzy, have chest pain, a heart condition or have been told to avoid exercise, speak to your GP before starting. Ask your GP or practice team about a falls risk assessment or strength and balance classes if you have fallen in the past year or are worried about falling. Stop any exercise that causes pain, dizziness or breathlessness and get advice.
