Consumer Help guide

Buy safely from overseas websites

Spot overseas sellers before you pay, avoid surprise customs and courier charges, and know your realistic options when an order from abroad goes wrong.

Estimated time: 20–40 minutesUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide before ordering from a website or marketplace seller based outside the UK, especially during autumn sales when many shoppers buy gifts from abroad. Have the product page, the seller's details and the delivery and returns terms open.

Step by step

  1. Find out where the seller really is

A '.co.uk' address or prices in pounds do not prove the seller is in the UK. Check the 'About us', imprint, terms and returns pages for a company name and registered address, and look at where items ship from. On marketplaces, open the seller profile, which often shows the business address.
