Consumer Help guide

Challenge hidden fees added at checkout

Spot fees that should have been in the headline price, ask the trader to remove them in writing and know where to report drip pricing if they refuse.

Estimated time: 20–40 minutesUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide when a booking, ticket or online order suddenly costs more at checkout because of booking, service, admin or 'handling' fees you were not told about at the start. Have screenshots of the price you first saw and the final price, plus your order confirmation if you have already paid.

Step by step

  1. Capture the price journey now

Before you close the page, screenshot the first price you saw, each checkout screen and the final total, making sure the date, time and web address bar are visible. Note the name and amount of every extra charge. Under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, since 6 April 2025 traders must include unavoidable fixed fees in the headline price they first show you, so the gap between the first and final screen is your evidence.
