Use this guide before you ever get a puncture, so you know what your car carries, and when one happens on a quiet road. Check whether you have a spare wheel, space saver or inflation kit, plus the jack, wheel brace and locking wheel nut key.

Step by step

1. Stop somewhere safe

   Pull over as far from traffic as possible on firm, level ground and switch on your hazard lights. Do not try to change a wheel on a motorway hard shoulder or a narrow verge; get out on the side away from traffic, get behind a barrier and call for help. Wear a high-visibility vest if you have one.
