Use this guide before you print signs, buy a website or register a company, or if you are rebranding an existing business. Have a shortlist of three to five possible names and an idea of your business structure, such as sole trader or limited company. This guide gives general information; a trade mark attorney can help with disputes or complex brands.
Step by step
Check the basic naming rules
Read the GOV.UK guidance on business names before you shortlist. A sole trader can trade under a name other than their own, but cannot use 'Limited', 'Ltd' or 'plc', and must show their own name and business address on paperwork such as invoices. Certain 'sensitive' words and expressions, and words suggesting a connection with government, need permission. Names must not be offensive.
