Check if a water meter could cut your water bill

Work out whether a water meter would lower your bill, ask your water company to fit one, and know your options for help or switching back if it costs more.

Estimated time: 30–45 minutesUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide if your water bill feels high, especially if you live alone or in a small household in a larger home. Have your latest water bill, the number of people in your home and a rough idea of how often you shower, bathe and run the washing machine.

Step by step

  1. Understand how you are charged now

Look at your bill to see whether you pay an unmetered charge, usually based on the old rateable value of your home, or a metered charge based on how much you use. If you are unmetered, the bill stays the same however little water you use. A meter often helps when there are fewer people in the home than bedrooms, and it can cost more for large or high-use households.
