Check whether you and your spouse or civil partner qualify for Marriage Allowance, apply free on GOV.UK and backdate your claim for earlier tax years.

Estimated time: 20–30 minutesUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide if you are married or in a civil partnership and one of you earns less than the Personal Allowance while the other pays tax at the basic rate. Have both National Insurance numbers, and proof of identity details such as a payslip, P60 or passport for the person applying.

Step by step

  1. Check you qualify

Marriage Allowance lets the lower earner transfer part of their unused Personal Allowance to their spouse or civil partner, which reduces the higher earner's tax. You usually qualify if you are married or in a civil partnership, the lower earner has income below the Personal Allowance and the higher earner pays basic rate tax (or starter, basic or intermediate rate in Scotland). Check the current Personal Allowance and transfer amount on GOV.UK. If either of you was born before 6 April 1935, you may get Married Couple's Allowance instead.
