Match realistic side income ideas to your skills, time and budget, test one safely, and understand when to tell HMRC about extra earnings.

Estimated time: 45–60 minutesUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide if you want extra money alongside a job, studies or caring, but are not sure what is realistic. Have a list of your skills and interests, the hours you can genuinely spare each week, and a note of anything in your employment contract about second jobs.

Step by step

  1. Work out what you can offer and when

Write three columns: skills (things people already ask you for help with), assets (a car, a spare room, tools, a driveway) and time (hours per week, and which days). Be honest; two reliable evenings a week is better than an ambitious plan you drop. Check your employment contract for rules on second jobs or conflicts of interest, and do not use your employer's equipment or time.
