Estimated time: 20–40 minutes, plus waiting timeUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide if you or your child was born between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011 and you do not know where the Child Trust Fund went. Have the child's full name, date of birth and address history, and their National Insurance number if they are 16 or over.

Step by step

  1. Check whether a fund was set up

Almost every child born in the UK between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011 had a Child Trust Fund opened with a government payment. If parents did not choose a provider, HMRC opened one for them, so many people do not know where theirs is. Look through old paperwork for statements from a bank, building society or investment firm, which may mention the account.
