Get a fair payout when your car is written off

Check your insurer's valuation, build evidence of your car's true market value, negotiate or complain in writing, and sort finance, DVLA paperwork and your next car.

Estimated time: 2–4 hours to build your evidence; the whole process usually takes 2–8 weeksUpdated: 2 October 2026

This guide is for drivers whose insurer has said their car is a total loss after an accident, flood, fire or theft and who now face an offer that may not replace what they had. It explains write-off categories, how market value is worked out, how to gather proof of your car's real value and how to negotiate, complain and, if needed, go to the Financial Ombudsman Service. You will end with a valuation evidence pack, ready-to-send letters and a clear plan for finance, paperwork and getting back on the road.

Why this is a Golden Edition guide: Shows you how to test and challenge a write-off valuation with evidence and the right wording, where a single counter-offer can be worth hundreds of pounds.

Step by step

  1. Understand the write-off decision and category

Ask your insurer in writing which write-off category they have given the car and why. Category A means the car must be scrapped completely, and Category B means the body shell must be crushed though some parts may be salvaged; neither can return to the road. Category S means structural damage and Category N non-structural damage; both can in principle be repaired and used again. A write-off is usually an economic decision: repair costs plus other costs are judged too high compared with the car's value. Ask for the engineer's report and repair estimate, as you are entitled to understand how the decision was reached.
