Heavy items such as bookshelves, large mirrors and wall-mounted TVs need more than a basic plug and screw. The right fixing depends on whether the wall is solid masonry, plasterboard on studs or plasterboard on dabs. This guide builds on basic drilling skills to help you fix heavy loads safely.

Identify the wall type
Knock on the wall: a hollow sound suggests plasterboard on a timber or metal frame, while a solid sound suggests brick or block. A test hole in a hidden spot shows the dust colour: red or grey for masonry, white followed by nothing for hollow board.
Check the load and bracket rating
Find the weight of the item, plus anything you will put on it, and check the rated load for the brackets and fixings. Use more brackets or stronger fixings rather than relying on the minimum.
Locate studs, pipes and cables
Use a detector to find timber or metal studs, and check for cables and pipes. Avoid drilling directly above, below or beside sockets and switches, where cables often run.
Choose the right fixing
On masonry, use good-quality wall plugs or masonry anchors of the right size. On stud walls, screw into the studs where possible. Where there is no stud, use heavy-duty cavity fixings rated for the load, or add a timber batten fixed across several studs.
Mark, level and drill
Hold the bracket in place, mark through with a pencil and check level with a spirit level. Drill with the correct bit size and depth, keeping the drill straight, and clean out the dust.
Fix, test and load gradually
Fit the brackets and tighten firmly without overtightening. Pull down on the shelf firmly by hand before loading it, then add weight gradually and check nothing moves.

The hole is too big or the masonry is crumbly. Move slightly and drill a fresh hole, or use a larger plug, a resin anchor or a different fixing for soft blocks.
The drill suddenly goes in easily after resistance. What happened?
You have probably gone through plasterboard into a cavity. Stop and check for services, then use a cavity fixing or find a stud nearby.
The shelf is sagging in the middle. How do I fix it?
The span between brackets is too long for the load or the shelf material. Add another bracket in the middle or use a thicker, stiffer shelf.
