Learning guide

Learn to swim as an adult with confidence

Find adult swimming lessons that suit you, manage nerves in the water, practise between lessons and build up to swimming lengths safely at your own pace.

Estimated time: 30 minutes to plan, then weekly lessons for a term or moreUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide if you never learned to swim, gave up as a child, or want to feel safer in water before a holiday. You need a swimming costume, goggles and a rough idea of which days and times you can get to a pool.

Step by step

  1. Find the right adult lessons

Contact your local leisure centre or council pool and ask whether they run adult beginner lessons, small group classes or one-to-one sessions. Ask: 'Do you have a class for adult beginners who are nervous in the water, and is the teacher qualified to teach adults?' Many adults feel more comfortable in adult-only sessions or quieter times of day, so ask about these too.
