Estimated time: 20–40 minutes plus the appointmentUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you have not had your eyes tested in the last two years, you are noticing changes in your vision, or you have an eye problem and are unsure where to go. Have your current glasses or contact lens details and a list of any medicines or health conditions.

Step by step

  1. Know which eye symptoms are urgent

Go to A&E or call 999 for a sudden loss of vision, a chemical in the eye or a serious eye injury. Get urgent same-day help through NHS 111 or an optometrist for a painful red eye, sudden flashes of light or a shower of new floaters, a curtain or shadow over part of your vision, or sudden double vision. These can be signs of conditions that need rapid treatment to protect sight.
