Use this guide a couple of weeks before October half-term, when you need to juggle work, childcare and keeping children busy. Have your school's term dates, your work calendar and any family calendar open.
Step by step
Confirm the dates
Check the exact half-term dates on your school's or council's website, including any training days either side. If children go to different schools, check each one, as dates can differ. Put the dates in your family calendar.
Sort cover for work days
List the days you or your partner are working and decide who covers each one. Book annual leave early, ask family or friends, or book a holiday club, as places fill quickly. Note pick-up and drop-off times for each day.
Ask the children what they want
Give each child a say in one or two activities, such as a park trip, a film, a craft or seeing friends. Mix busier days with quieter home days so no one gets overtired. Include free options such as libraries, local walks and museums.
Plan around the clocks going back
In the UK the clocks go back an hour on the last Sunday in October, which often falls in or near half-term. Plan outdoor activities earlier in the day while it is light. Keep bedtimes fairly steady so the return to school is easier.
Write a simple week plan
Put each day on one page or whiteboard with who is in charge, the main activity and any bookings. Share it with everyone involved, including grandparents or carers. Keep one or two days deliberately unplanned.
Prepare for the return to school
Leave the last day of the holiday for homework, washing uniforms and packing bags. Check for any school letters, trips or forms due after half-term. Get back to the usual bedtime a night or two before school starts.

Common problems
Holiday clubs near us are fully booked.
Ask to join waiting lists, check council-run and leisure centre schemes, and consider splitting days with family or other parents. Ask your employer about working from home or different hours for a day or two.
The children are bored and arguing by mid-week.
Get everyone outside for a walk or run-around, then give each child some quiet time apart. Rotate who chooses the next activity.
Homework was left until the last night.
Next time, set a short homework slot early in the week. For now, focus on what is due first and tell the teacher honestly if something could not be finished.
