Sketch the finished shape
Draw each surface or component, mark openings and write units on every measurement. Split irregular areas into simple rectangles or triangles.
Measure twice in the same unit
Take measurements at more than one point because walls and floors may not be square. Record the controlling or smallest dimension where fit matters.
Convert to purchasable units
Calculate area, length or volume, then translate the result into board sizes, packs, tiles or bags using the manufacturer’s coverage information.
Add justified waste
Allow for cuts, pattern matching, breakage and future repairs. Keep the calculation separate from the allowance so it can be reviewed.

Common problems
The room is not square
Measure diagonals and widths at several points; plan reference lines rather than forcing the finish to follow a crooked edge.

Surface condition, thickness and application method matter. Follow the product data and buy a test quantity for uncertain substrates.
