Regrout tired or cracked tiles

Use this guide when grout is cracked, crumbling, missing or permanently stained, but the tiles themselves are firm. You need a grout rake or multi-tool, a vacuum, grout suited to the area, a rubber float, a sponge, a bucket and a dry cloth.

Step by step

1. Check the tiles are sound

   Tap each tile gently; a hollow sound or movement means it may be loose. Regrouting will not fix loose tiles or a leaking shower tray, so deal with those first. Mould that returns quickly can also point to a ventilation problem.
