Small renter-friendly upgrades that make a home yours

Pick reversible, low-cost changes to lighting, walls, textiles and storage that make a rented home feel personal without risking your deposit.

Estimated time: 30–60 minutes to plan, then a weekendUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide when your rented home feels bland or temporary and you want it to feel like yours without breaking your tenancy agreement. Have your tenancy agreement, a tape measure and your phone camera ready.

Step by step

  1. Check what you are allowed to change

Read the alterations and decoration clauses in your tenancy agreement and photograph every wall, floor and fitting before you start, so you can prove the original condition at check-out. Anything involving holes, paint or swapping fittings needs written permission. A short email works: 'I would like to put up three pictures using small picture hooks and fill the holes when I leave. Are you happy for me to do this?' Keep the reply with your tenancy paperwork.
