Resolve a dispute with a builder over poor work

Gather evidence of poor or unfinished building work, give the trader a fair chance to put it right, and escalate through trade bodies, ADR or the small claims court.

Estimated time: 1–2 hours over a few daysUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide when a builder, roofer, kitchen fitter or similar trader has done work that is faulty, unfinished or not what you agreed. Have your quote or contract, payment records, messages and photos together before you start.

Step by step

  1. Pin down what was agreed

Find the written quote, contract, emails or texts that describe the job, the price, materials and any timescale. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, a service must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, and anything the trader said that you relied on can form part of the agreement. Write a one-page summary listing what was agreed, what was paid and when, and exactly what is wrong.
