DIY & Repairs guide

Service uPVC windows that stick or let in draughts

Clean, lubricate and adjust uPVC window hinges, locking points and seals so windows close tightly and stop rattling or whistling before winter.

Estimated time: 20–30 minutes per windowUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide when a uPVC window is stiff to lock, rattles in the wind, drops at the corner or lets in a cold draught when closed. Have a soft brush, a cloth, warm soapy water, a light machine oil or silicone spray, a set of hex keys and a cross-head screwdriver ready.

Step by step

  1. Do the paper test first

Close a sheet of paper in the window and lock it, then try to pull it out at several points around the frame. Where it slides out easily, the seal is not compressing and that is where cold air gets in. Mark these spots with a small piece of masking tape so you know where to adjust and which seals to check.
