Family & Relationships guide

Support a student through their first term away

Stay connected with a son or daughter starting university or college away from home, help with money and wellbeing, and know when and how to step in.

Estimated time: 30–45 minutes plus regular check-insUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide in the first weeks after your child leaves for university or college. Have their accommodation address, their university's student support contact, and a rough idea of their budget and student finance dates.

Step by step

  1. Agree how you will keep in touch

Ask them how often and how they would like to talk, such as a weekly video call on Sunday evening and messages in between, rather than setting it yourself. Respect that early weeks are busy and that fewer calls often means they are settling in. Agree one simple signal for when they need you, such as a message saying can you call me tonight.
