Estimated time: 1 hour of setup a week before, plus the exam itselfUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide if you are sitting a professional, university or certification exam online with a remote invigilator watching through your webcam. Have your booking confirmation, the exam provider's rules and the computer you plan to use ready.

Step by step

  1. Read the provider's rules line by line

Find the candidate rules or online exam guide from your exam provider and read them in full, as rules differ between providers. Note what is allowed on the desk, whether you may use scrap paper or a whiteboard, whether breaks are permitted and what counts as a rule break, such as looking away from the screen or speaking aloud. Write a short list of the rules that surprise you and keep it next to your computer.
